Mrs. Giggles liked Sam
This morning I woke up, bleary as usual, and as is my new habit, grabbed the iPad and scanned through my mail. In it was a message from a friend on a private loop, and the subject line said:
halleluia-– Special Delivery got a Keeper review
And I thought, oh? Really? I was a bit perplexed, because this was someone who doesn’t as a rule follow m/m reviews, so I wondered how in the hell she even knew about this? So, still bleary, I opened the email and read on. And discovered that the review was from Mrs. Giggles.
Now, some of you already get the significance of this, but for those of you who don’t, allow me to explain. Mrs. Giggles has been reviewing for a long time. This is no start-up review site. The other point of significance is that my greatest association with her until today was that she had made a significant number of my published friends cry. So this was a bit of a shock. I can’t even mentally process being a Mrs. Giggles Keeper.
I tried to explain this with Anna, partly because I wanted to share joy and she was the only one home, but largely because it felt unreal and I needed to say it out loud a little to make it real. So after fumbling and looking at her blank face, I went with the following.
Me: You remember the movie Ratatouille? You remember the skinny critic who hated everything, but liked the rat’s cooking?
Anna: (through the fog of memory) Yeah?
Me: Well. This is like that guy liking my book.
Anna: (smiling) That’s good, Mom! Does this mean it’s going to be in stores now?
Me: (pause) Um, actually, it already is in stores.
Anna: (pause) More stores?
Me: Well, maybe. It’s just nice to have someone who is that picky like my stuff, really.
Anna: Oh. Okay. Good job, Mom.
Yeah. Good job, Mom. *pats self on back*
